Handwoven Cork and Cotton-Jersey Rug Arizona
The colors of the sun-tanned state of Arizona inspired this handwoven rug. The weave patterns are composed of black and white cotton jersey fibers and natural brown cork fibers. A white segment of the carpet has a complex weave pattern with eye-shaped elements, otherwise it is woven in plain straight rows. The design looks fresh and lively without being obstrusive.
Cork's many useful properties complement and stabilize the cotton fabric perfectly. It is warm, light, elastic and resistant to abrasion. Its closed material structure offers microbes no surface to attack. In also dampens the sound of steps.
Weaving cork into a rug is an innovative technique developed by textile designer Susana Godinho who founded the workshop Sugo Cork in 2014 in the small Portuguese town of Santa Maria da Feira. A small team weaves the rugs manually, row by row, on traditional looms. In addition to cork from certified cultivation, only natural fibers such as wool, linen and recycled cotton are used. The whole production process aimes at the highest quality and sustainability.
